About Me
Who are you?
Hey, I’m Matthew. I run Note to Self — a coaching practice for people who are sick of feeling stuck and actually want to move forward.
What’s your background?
I’ve spent over a decade in workforce learning and development. I’ve seen careers from every angle — the highs, the lows, and the long stretches in between where you quietly wonder, “What am I even doing?”
Along the way I’ve picked up:
- CIPD Diploma in L&D
- ILM Level 7 in Executive Coaching & Mentoring (British School of Coaching)
- ICF Career Coach accreditation (Full Circle Coaching)

Are you one of those end-of-career gurus?
Nope. I’m not a 30-year HR veteran. I haven’t led global People functions. I’m still in the middle of my own career — figuring this stuff out, just like you.
I’ve had the tough 1:1s, been blindsided by bad feedback, worked with managers who made every day harder than it needed to be — and I’ve been made redundant. Twice. So yes, I get it. Work is messy.
What’s your approach to coaching?
A good coach doesn’t tell you what to do. I’m not here to hand you a ready-made plan, direct you or tell you what’s right and what’s wrong – that’s for you to work out.
I’m here to help you figure out what’s really blocking you, decide what you actually want, and build a plan that gets you moving.
Why do people work with you?
Clients say I’m:
- Practical – If it won’t work in real life, it’s not worth doing.
- Down to earth – No waffle, no jargon, no pretending.
- Deeply human – Actions and goals matter, but so do thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
What’s it like working with you?
You’ll get space to think clearly, explore freely, and make lasting progress. I’ll listen, ask uncomfortable-but-important questions, and call you out (kindly) when you’re getting in your own way.
Who do you work with?
Leaders navigating big shifts. People at a career crossroads. Anyone tired of being stuck who’s ready to move.
What’s your philosophy?
Careers aren’t about LinkedIn hype or chasing other people’s definition of success. Your FOMO isn’t worth the energy you’re spending on it.
Let’s figure out what your working life should look like — and make it happen.
How do I know coaching is for me?
I can probably help you if:
- You’ve been made redundant and you’re struggling to figure out what’s next — or you’ve landed somewhere new but the confidence knock hasn’t gone away.
- You’ve got a work problem to solve — maybe a difficult manager, a performance conversation you’re dreading, or a 1:1 that always leaves you deflated.
- You’re at a crossroads — wondering whether to push for promotion, change industries, or walk away entirely.
- You’re feeling stuck — not miserable, but not excited either, and unsure what to do about it.
- You want to be challenged — you’re ready for someone to ask the questions your friends won’t, and to hold you accountable for acting on the answers.
If you recognise yourself in any of those, coaching is probably exactly what you need right now.
